.a research project that Engages Water as Culture and Resource through Contemporary Art

A Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada funded Research/Creation project begun in 2011 and culminating in 2014.

mountain_04mountain_06It is a goal of the Immersion Emergencies and Possible Worlds project to bring together Canadian and international artists and researchers from multiple backgrounds to highlight a multitude of the linked concerns of those individuals/their work. In this regard a residency at The Banff Centre provided an ideal environment to develop our project in conversation with renowned contemporary international artists Lucy and Jorge Orta, respected curator Stuart Reid of the Rodman Hall Art Centre at Brock University, and water scientist R.W. Sandford whose meeting with us influenced this essay.

.

In addition to holding meetings and seminars with our distinguished guests, we utilized their expertise during individual studio visits and consultations during our time at The Banff Centre. We established connections with researchers to enrich our understanding of water issues in the local area and experienced geological sites such as the Columbia Ice Fields. We were very pleased to engage with the community at the Banff Centre through a public lecture by the Ortas on May 2nd, as well as through an exhibition of work in progress at the Philosopher’s Knoll Project Space on May 10th.
